The
remnants of Henry Gulick's homestead and the Indian Shaker Church. An easy walk
along the banks of the Columbia River at the end of The Dalles bridge.
Henry Gulick immigrated from Scotland in the 1890s and married Harriet,
a local Wasco woman, who was a member of the Indian Shaker movement. Although
he wasn't religious, he built a small wooden church for his wife and the other
members as well as living quarters, a barn, and other buildings. Unfortunately,
the church collapsed under the weight of snow in 1996 but the other buildings
are still standing - barely. If you go there, be careful around them! If it is
warm weather be careful of slithery creatures around the buildings. |
