Daschund Fun Facts:  Moderate to high energy level. Clever, lively, courageous, bold. Independent and stubborn. Quite barky (there's an understatement). Makes an excellent watchdog except it's hard to tell if there is a real threat or not (this one barks at the lawn, the house, the neighbors, other dogs - real or imaginary, dirt, clouds, cats, bugs, air and trees). Reserved with strangers (but after giving them a good bark or two, they can be quite friendly). Dachshunds are very sociable and get along very well with most other dogs - Betty gets along pretty well with her cat also. There are actually 2 major type of Daschund's; the Standard and the Miniature that can be divided into a total of 6 types based on coat; the Standard Long haired, the Miniature Long haired, the Standard Wire-haired, the Miniature Wire-haired, and the Standard Smooth, and the Miniature Smooth. The long-haired variety of Dachshund differs from the short-haired variety only by its softer and longer coat.  Obviously, Betty Roo is a short, smooth hair kind of Daschund dog.  Most probably the long-haired Dachshund was developed by crossing the short-haired Dachshund with some sort of Spaniel.  Daschunds were developed in Germany for hunting badgers - they take on the attributes of badgers from time to time and also exhibit other "non-dog" behavior (digging, nesting, tunneling, hiding food and then barking to announce that the food is hidden and that we should stay away).
